How to write a resume – Key Skills

The Key Skills section is found near the top of the resume, in prime place to catch the readers attention. It’s mostly used to support the Objective or Summary statement by listing out your most relevant skills.

Key Skills

The Key Skills is slightly different from the Technical Skills section as it does not group the skills into any categories. There are three types of skills that you can choose to list:

  • Transferable Skills,
  • Subject Knowledge or
  • Computer Skills.

The number of key skills to include in the list will depend on how many you have and need to include to meet the needs of the position. Being selective in what to include and exclude is an important decision.

How to create key skills.

1. Transferable Skills are abilities you have acquired from your work experience or other activities (including classes, projects, hobbies, volunteering or sports). Transferable skills are not position specific or knowledge specific, by their very nature they can be used in a number of settings and situations.

Example

Multi-line switchboard Events planning
Office supplies purchasing/inventory/negotiation Word processing, reports, newsletters, mailings
Calendars/scheduling Travel arrangements/negotiation
Data entry/50 wpm Research

2. Subject specific knowledge or skills as they relate to your position, or industry. The skills or knowledge listed here are unlikely to be learned in other positions or industries, and tend to be relevant mainly for those positions.

Example

Employment Law Employee Development
Staffing Disciplinary Action
Compensation Benefits
Employee Relations Payroll

3. The Computer skills listed here (and not in the Technical Skills) demonstrate your proficiency in using applications and computer system generally available. With computer technology playing an even greater role in our jobs it’s inevitable you will use certain technology, and also very likely you will be asked to do so in your next position.

Example

Excel Word PowerPoint
Access Visio Outlook
Filemaker Adobe insight Sage FAS

Trying all these variations can be time consuming, but the resume creator in Isabont lets you create, insert and remove sections or information easily. Try it for free, it’s simple to create an account and start experimenting.
