Why the heck do we need process(es)?

And why am I reading this, and what are you getting at!

Well, I used to drive my consulting teams crazy with the question “why do we need processes?”.  Now the kicker here is that most consulting firms define themselves as ‘process’ and/or ’strategy’.   And, therefore, their consulting staff is labeled either ‘process’ or ’strategy’.

Now there is some interesting logic that dictates that ‘there is no strategy process’ (because then it would be in ‘process’ and there wouldn’t be any ’strategy’  – duh…).

Now all is well and good until some naive young buck comes up with the question “what is the strategy process”.  And you laugh “ho, ho, ho, there is no strategy process because if there was we would be in ‘process’” and therefore there would be no ’strategy’.

And that, my friend, is great circular logic.
